2016 Composer in Residence: Nina C. Young

We first performed Nina’s music at our #Murica! concert in 2015.  Her interview with us in early 2016 gives you some insight into what we love so much about her music:

I adore sounds and am endlessly intrigued by them.  Every moment presents itself as some sort of sonic experience and my mind is constantly collecting and cataloging the sounds of my environment and how they resonate in different locations.  While this provides a great deal of mental entertainment, it has also encouraged quite a bit of insomnia!  Anyhow, I try to spend time focusing and taking mental sonic “photographs” (though sometimes, I just use a recorder) and save this memory data for use in my music.

We will be giving the UK premieres of a number of works by Nina in 2016, and have co-commissioned a viola concert with the riotously awesome Ensemble Échappé, which will be premiered in Autumn 2016.

Call for Scores 2016

Our 2016 call for scores saw 218 entries from all over the world.  We started out looking for two composers, and commissioned Yukiko Watanabe and Lee Westwood for our Micrographia concert, which took place on 29th October 2016.  We hope to announce a number of other commissions throughout the year.

Here are the live, world premiere performances, of both pieces:
