Now in it’s fourth year, our annual concert with the New Music Brighton composer collective sees us perform an array of their miniatures alongside the UK premiere of Chaya Czernowin’s Ayre: Towed through plumes, thicket, asphalt, sawdust and hazardous air I shall not forget the sound of, alongside the world premieres of a new piece by Amy Beth Kirsten and two of our call for scores commissions.

Meeting Tim Rutherford-Johnson

We’re completely delighted to welcome Tim to our artistic board. As well as composing poetic and illuminating programme notes to our concerts, Tim brings an academic slant to our programming as well as a keen contextual eye on our activities within a wider contemporary scene.

Tim has just published (with University of California Press) ‘Music after the Fall’ – the first detailed survey of western art music in the post-Cold War era. He is also the editor for ‘Sounds Like Now’ – a brand new independent magazine devoted to contemporary classical music which launches its first issue in May. You can also follow his highly regarded blog here.

Alex Ross has called Tim ‘probably the most authoritative international chronicler of the composed music of our time’.

Pretty impressive stuff, we think you’ll agree. But how will he fare with the really big questions, such as ‘favourite 007’ or ‘mayonnaise or salad cream’? You can find out below …

In what ways have you Rioted so far?
I’m the group’s in-house writer; so far I’ve written notes to four Riot concerts, with more to come. As a new member of the artistic board I’ve also thrown in a few Riotous programming suggestions.
Teenage tearaway, or nerdy note-learner?
Oh, I was a proper nerd – books, science, music, the lot.
Favourite musician?
Toss-up between Olivier Messiaen and Kim Gordon.
Favourite performance venue?
Anything off the beaten track: small rooms in the back of pubs, that sort of thing. Hawksmoor’s churches in London are always special places to listen too.
People have said this about me …
“That T-shirt makes you look pregnant.” – my daughter.
Strictly or X Factor?
Bake Off.
The best 007 is …
Roger Moore is the most fun, but Daniel Craig has made the better films. I wish they’d had the courage to make Skyfall the last Bond; that was a perfect ending.

Mayo. With chips.

Arts funding. Inequality. The environment.

Sussex Experimental Music Festival

In an evening of music and performances inspired by Stockhausen, we’ll be performing three audio video works by the music of Sussex University Student Tom Reid as part of the Sussex University Experimental Music Festival.  Other student composers on the festival include Natalie Whiteland, Anton Pearson, Louis Borlase, Jason Hazael & Ella Moll (Rochelle Rochelle).

Various Stages

We are thrilled to join Mahogany Opera Group’s Various Stages Festival as the resident ensemble.  We’ll be workshopping and premiering a scene from Oliver Brignall’s new opera Palace of Junk, a multimedia retelling of the tragic tale of the Collyer brothers, an infamous pair of hoarders, and an exploration into hoarding disorder.  We’ll also be performing in Christopher Cerrone, Stephanie Fleischmann and Brian Mertes’ In a Grove, an immersive opera inspired by a short story by Japanese author Ryūnosuke Akutagawa examining an incident of love torn by violence from multiple perspectives; and Calamity/Billy by Théâtre de la Croix-Rousse, Gavin Bryars, Ben Johnston and Michael Ondaatje, a double portrait of two iconic wild west heroes Billy the Kid and Calamity Jane that shows a different and more intimate side to the characters.

Come celebrate Jonathan Harvey’s rarely heard masterwork Jubilus – with Artistic Board Member Stephen Upshaw on solo viola – alongside the world premiere of composer/clarinettist Scott Lygate’s Chamber Symphony, the UK premiere of Augusta Read Thomas’ Capricious Angels, and our second performance of Helga Arias Parra’s Incipit (commissioned and premiered by us in 2015)!

Listen II: The Text Scores of Pauline Oliveros

Venue: Cardiff University Concert Hall (CF10 3EB)

We return to Cardiff University for an evening-length performance of Pauline Oliveros’ Text Scores, like the one below.  You can read Tim Rutherford-Johnson’s reflections on these scores on our blog. The music is joyous, fun and informal.  The concert will take place in two halves, with an interval.
Riot Ensemble will also do a workshop with Cardiff University composers the next morning.
